No thinking, Immediate response and be honest.....

Not a recomendation question but rather....First thing that pops in your head when I say....

"5 star gig"

barton hall first popped in mine. I figured that was obvious so my next thought was Swing auditorium 1977. That ,I thought, was interesting. probably a top 3 gig from that year and a fav of mine. I Wonder why that one popped in before many others? I'm interested if you guys will have the same thing happen.

Wonderful TOO from that show. One of my all-time favorites.

2/14/68 is the first five star night that comes to mind.

My favorite show:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd77-05-09.sbd.connor.8304.sbeok.shnf

H-S-F is stunning, and just an incredible all around show. Bertha-Good Lovin opener to set 2 is a throw down dancers dream. Comes a Time and an UJB encore.

This defines what 5 Stars is.

I was at 5-6 and actually have some recollection of it so it always jumps to mind first. Will definitely check 5-1 though, thanks :)

I've gotta say that I don't think I'm as critical as most people and it's basicly whatever is floating my boat at the moment but that said I'm listening to this new 74-10-16 miller upgrade and am finding the appropriate amount of bliss points to categorize a 5 star rating.

11/06/77 - Binghampton, NY
Start to finish one of the most powerful Dead shows in history. Sure others will point to shows that are more exploratory or will argue that this or that version of Scarlet>Fire, etc. is better, but there are few other Dead shows with this much power (just listen to Wharf Rat). Of course, I am still of the opinion that there is no such thing as a "perfect" Dead show. Just like Navajo art there is always a small flaw - proving that all of us (including the band) are indeed merely mortals. The appearance of Sunrise in this show keeps it just short of perfection for me.

swamprabbit: Great call! This was one of my first bootleg tapes ('78). Played the second set so many times that eventually a former girlfriend said, "See ya!" Her birthdate: Nov. 6 (different year). ...unbelievable on every level! How about that Jerry jam at the end of "Truckin'(?)" .... Gotta play this fav tonight; thanks for the reminder.

try me:

August 17th, 1970.

An evening with the Grateful Dead and The New Riders.

http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-08-17.aud.cotsman.12073.sbeok.shnf

http://www.deadlists.com/default.asp?http://deadlists.com/deadlists/showresults.asp?KEY=8/17/70

(the 3 songs may not even be from the 17th!)

June 4th, 1970:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-06-04.sbd.miller.12135.sbeok.shnf

and it was actually April 11th 1970, not the 10th
that I'm pretty sure I went to my first GD show...
I'm pretty certain they ended the night with Saint Stephen and Lovelight:

Set 1:
Cold Rain And Snow
I'm A King Bee
Beat It On Down The Line
Dire Wolf
It's A Man's World

Set 2:
Don't Ease Me In
New Speedway Boogie
Friend Of The Devil
Me And My Uncle
Deep Elem Blues
Candyman
Black Peter
Uncle John's Band

Set 3:
Dark Star
St. Stephen
Not Fade Away
Turn On Your Love Light

http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-04-11.sbd.cotsman.12072.sbeok.shnf

Great version of Lovelight!
I was at all 3 of these life-affirming, evolutionary 5 star gigs.

Proof is in the snippets that exist for these 3 shows.

Believe me if you you need to, 5 Stars and that's no lie.

Good to see ya Ashes...........Myself, 74 was the year Quadiflex and all that jazz. The wall itself was mindbending. I like the Cow Palace show from earlier in the year, JBL's were new...etc, so this fresno show works today at LMA >http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-07-19.sbd.symons.12381.sbeok.shnf

Thanks. I know we didn't get off on the right foot and I extend my apologies.
Right after I thought of the 5/11 show I thought about 2/24/74 and 6/9/77. Two more 5 star shows among many in my book. Peace.
